Hotell Gamla Fängelset is a converted prison from 1861 located in central Umeå and offers free WiFi and breakfast. All rooms have windows and shared bathroom facilities. I booked in rather a hurry and somehow missed the detail that this property is a converted 1800s prison! The conversion has been done to a high standard; the history of the building is clearly visible but everything feels well maintained, fresh, bright, clean and - for a former prison - remarkably cosy. The staff are super-friendly and I was made to feel extremely welcome. The kitchen is big and very well equipped. The location, a short walk from both the river and the town centre, made this a great base even for a very short stay in Umeå. Late check-in was not a problem and I had received a door code in advance by SMS text message (not via the Booking.com system!) - my inability to find it was my own fault, due to disorganisation and the complexity of my journey, but my quick out-of-hours call to reception late on a Sunday evening was handled in a very friendly manner and I was soon inside the building.

Situated in the heart of Umeå, Elite Hotel Mimer faces the Twin Towns Park and the main commercial pedestrian street. Guests have free WiFi along with free access to a sauna and fitness centre. The breakfast was phenomenal! The staff was very accommodating, working with us to offer the best experience possible. They had a sauna that opened at 3pm, but if we wanted to use it a bit earlier, they offered to start it up a bit earlier. The location was perfect, right close to downtown, but also not right in the thick of it. Highly recommend!

I love this beautiful, wonderful small city and will definitely be returning for another visit ♥ It's easy to go around exploring places because the bus services are very good (and the buses are really pretty with the birch leaf decorations :))
Umea is a wonderful nordic city with a small population. The city is generally safe and the people are generally welcoming and willing to assist especially when visitors seem lost. The cost of living seems to be high compared to other places but this is understandable given the high incomes and standard of living in Sweden. In general, it is a good and relaxing place to visit for a nordic city.
Umeå is nice city with beautiful river side city center. Everything is at walking distance and there are many interesting shops and cafes at pedestrian zone. Shopping mall(s) are within short distance and accessible with public transportation. At sunny day you can also have picnic at river side.
Loved how easy the city was to navigate on foot and find your way from site to site. Handy signposts were great. I ate on the go - Subway & tried Sibylla for first time. Started off full of energy thanks to the solid breakfast provided all-inclusive at my hostel. Managed to squeeze in Umedalen Sculpture Park, Women's History Museum, Bildmuseet plus nearby giant clothespeg sculpture, Västerbotten Museum, Umeå City Church and the local cinema in my 2 day stay. Not bad! Riverside walkway also made for a charming saunter beside the frozen river. Sadly no SSL/Allsvenskan innebandy matches played for me to attend while there and the Guitar Museum was closed but makes for great reasons to return :)
The center of the city is so beautiful and well organized. The river looks so nice and it is an amazing way to relax. Many shops open for late hours and that's so good. There are many shopping malls, and it is fair enough. The transport network is so comfort.
Beautiful, but geografically not very different from our starting cityin Vasa, Finland. Bars and restaurants were really good. Everything is quite easy accessable, and most places we visited were also wheelchair friendly.
